The neurosurgery service at Khon Kaen University (KKU) is a
very busry service. There is only one neurosurgeon at KKU (Dr. Chaiwit Thanapaisal).
He staffs a weekly clinic on Mondays, where he sees as many as 60 patients
weekly. A common pathology seen at this clinic is congenital nervous system
disorders, like frontal encephaloceles-
Dr. Thanapaisal averages 35-40 cases per month- mostly brain tumors,
congenital disorders and vascular cases. Dr. Thanapaisal manages complex
head injury cases. The routine trauma cases including subdural amd epidural
hematomas are managed by general surgery.
During the visit, Drs. Awasthi and Dowd particpated in the surgical management
of several cases.
The cases included a 5 month old girl with a lipomyelomeningocele:
elevation of lipoma from the dura (near the forceps)
Final closure
Other cases managed at KKU included:suprasellar lesion (craniopharyngioma)
in a 14 year old- removed via a right pterional approach.
medulloblastoma in a 5 year old.
